The Beaufort Wind Scale
When deciding whether a wind turbine will work for your site, it is very important to study the wind speed. The Hydrogen Office are putting up a 750kW turbine that will work in winds of between 5 m/s and 25 m/s, or between 3 and 10 on the Beaufort Scale. The Beaufort scale was thought up by Admiral Francis Beaufort in 1805, and is a measure of the wind speeds at sea. Nowadays we have equipment called Anemometers which measure wind speed and wind direction.
How windy is your Garden or School Playground? Using the Beaufort scale below, measure the wind speed for 1 week. Is it more or less windy than you thought it would be?

Beaufort Number |
Description | Miles per Hour (mph) | Meters per second (m/s) | Description of Sea | Description of Air |
| 0 | Calm | < 1 | < 0.3 | Flat. | Calm. Smoke rises vertically. |
| 1 | Light air | 1 – 3 | 0.3 – 1.5 | Ripples without crests. | Wind motion visible in smoke. |
| 2 | Light breeze | 4 – 7 | 1.6 – 3.4 | Small waves. Crests of glassy appearance, not breaking | Wind felt on exposed skin. Leaves rustle. |
| 3 | Gentle breeze | 8 – 12 | 3.4 – 5.4 | Small waves. Crests begin to break; scattered whitecaps | Leaves and smaller twigs in constant motion. |
| 4 | Moderate breeze | 13 – 17 | 5.5 – 7.9 | Small waves with breaking crests. Fairly frequent white horses. | Dust and loose paper lifted. Small branches begin to move. |
| 5 | Fresh breeze | 18 – 24 | 8.0 – 10.7 | Moderate waves of some length. Many white horses. Small amounts of spray. | Branches of a moderate size move. Small trees begin to sway. |
| 6 | Strong breeze | 25 – 30 | 10.8 – 13.8 | Long waves begin to form. White crests are very frequent. Some airborne spray is present. | Large branches in motion. Whistling heard in overhead wires. Umbrella use becomes difficult. Empty plastic bins tip over. |
| 7 |
High wind, Moderate gale |
31 – 38 | 13.9 – 17.1 | Sea heaps up. Moderate amounts of airborne spray. | Whole trees in motion. Effort needed to walk against the wind. Swaying of skyscrapers may be felt. |
| 8 |
Gale |
39 – 46 | 17.2 – 20.7 | Moderately high waves with breaking crests. Considerable airborne spray. | Some twigs broken from trees. Cars veer on road. Walking is very difficult. |
| 9 | Strong gale | 47 – 54 | 20.8 – 24.4 | High waves whose crests sometimes roll over. Large amounts of airborne spray may begin to reduce visibility. | Some branches break off trees, and some small trees blow over. Construction/temporary signs and barricades blow over. Damage to tents and canopies. |
| 10 |
Storm |
55 – 63 | 24.5 – 28.4 | Very high waves with overhanging crests. Considerable tumbling of waves with heavy impact. Large amounts of airborne spray reduce visibility. | Trees are broken off or uprooted. Slates fall off roofs. |
| 11 | 64 – 72 | 28.5 – 32.6 | Exceptionally high waves. Very large amounts of airborne spray severely reduce visibility. | Widespread damage to vegetation. Many roofs are damaged. | |
| 12 |
Hurricane Force |
≥ 73 | ≥ 32.7 | Huge waves. Sea is completely white. Air is filled with driving spray, greatly reducing visibility. | Very widespread damage to vegetation. Some windows may break; mobile homes and poorly constructed sheds and barns are damaged. Debris may be thrown about. |
